Letters: Property taxes; Donald Trump; Loveland City Council
By Reporter-Herald letters | news@reporter-herald.comPUBLISHED: November 24, 2023 at 6:07 a.m. | UPDATED: November 24, 2023 at 6:09 a.m.Tie property values to inflation rate
The current property tax assessment is flawed, with a close to 40% increase in property values. No one can afford this, whether it be property owners, renters or businesses.
The best way is to tie the property values to the national two years of the rate of inflation for 2021-2022.
This will provide the county government services the needed money to operate and provide the solution to the taxpayer to be simple, fair and understandable.
Rep. Jim Welker (ret.), HD 51, Loveland
Don’t let Trump fool us again
Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. Donald Trump fooled Americans in 2016. We didn’t know much about him then and didn’t believe it would make much difference whether he or Hillary won.
We should now know better. We knew then how he preferred to greet women, but too many said, “So what?” We now know many women actually experienced it.
We knew then he has no love of veterans, at least those who were captured. We now know he’s bewildered as to what those who served got out of it, expressing that at Arlington Cemetery to Gen. John Kelly, whose son lay among the dead.
He praised Putin while denigrating Ukraine and NATO. This past September he insinuated that America’s top general, Mark Miley, deserved execution for alerting the Chinese that the insurrection had failed. He warned recently that Jack Smith and other Justice Department officials will wind up in mental institutions if he’s re-elected next year.
He’s already been declared guilty by the judge in the New York City tax fraud trial. He’s charged with mishandling classified documents after he left office. Not to mention charged with asking a Georgia election official to find votes to make him winner. Or his being investigated for at least encouraging the insurrectionists on Jan. 6, 2021.
Now he says he’ll “root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country, that lie and steal and cheat on elections.” Sounds like Sen. Joe McCarthy reincarnate. Can Republicans really not stand up to him? Yet, in spite of all this, he’s still the prohibitive favorite for the GOP nomination in 2024. How can this be? How is he able to intimidate the party so much?
Ken Bublitz, Loveland
Loveland sends unfortunate message to businesses
I read with considerable dismay of the decision to rescind the resolution with regard to the development of Centerra South.
I cannot claim to be intimately familiar with the details of the matter although I have followed it closely, but frankly the details don’t matter. What matters in this instance is the absolute inability of businesses to rely on the city of Loveland to stand by its word. I own a building and operate a business in Loveland and, based on this behavior, I will never consider additional investments. If the need arises for new facilities or remodeling, I will be looking for another location outside the city.
Actions have consequences.  Mayor Marsh and her ilk need to learn this.
John P. Heinrich, Ph.D., Fort Collins
