Tony Bobulinski, a former business associate of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and a key witness in the impeachment hearings against Joe Biden, has filed a $20 million defamation lawsuit against House Democrat Jamie Raskin. The lawsuit alleges that Raskin made defamatory comments that ‘deliberately and maliciously’ tarnished Bobulinski’s character. This case serves as a stark reminder of the legal and ethical implications of public statements, particularly in the context of high-profile political proceedings.
Bobulinski was called by House Republicans to testify against the Bidens as part of their probe into the family’s business dealings. Raskin, however, has been an outspoken critic of the impeachment proceedings. He wrote to Bobulinski’s attorney in February, stating that his client’s interview was ‘chaotic to the point of burlesque’ and did not offer any evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden. Raskin also claimed that Bobulinski did not provide any evidence that President Biden was involved in his family’s business dealings.
The lawsuit points to social media posts by Raskin, in which he sought to discredit Bobulinski’s testimony to the House Oversight Committee, while also appearing to claim he had links to Russian or Chinese agents. Bobulinski’s attorneys argue that these were ‘false statements’ and also point to an interview Raskin had on MSNBC, which he shared on social media, ‘republishing his false statements to an entirely new audience.’
Bobulinski’s team argues that he has nothing to do with the Trump campaign and he has never lied to Congress. They claim that it was, in fact, Raskin and fellow congressman Dan Goldman who had been lying by sharing multiple social media posts targeting Bobulinski. The lawsuit is one of several reportedly filed by Bobulinski in recent months, including a $10 million suit against former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson and a $30 million case against Fox News pundit Jessica Tarlov.
This case underscores the importance of responsible financial citizenship and the potential legal consequences of public statements. As the lawsuit progresses, it will be interesting to see how the court interprets the defamation claims and what this could mean for future political discourse.
